IS FOSTERING RIGHT FOR ME?

A Guide to Becoming a Cat Foster

What Does Fostering Mean?

Fostering is providing a temporary home for a cat while they wait for adoption. Foster families offer shelter, food, care, love, and guidance—often giving cats their first experience of being treated like part of a family.

Fosters are the front line of rescue efforts. The number of cats that can be saved depends directly on how many people are willing to open their homes.

Why Fostering Matters

  • Rescues rely on foster homes to take in cats from overcrowded shelters or difficult situations. Without fosters, many cats would not get the chance they need.

  • In a home, cats receive socialization, attention, and stability. This helps them become healthier, calmer, and more appealing to adopters.

  • Some cats come from neglect, fear, or trauma. As a foster, you help them learn trust, safety, and love—sometimes for the first time.

  • Each fostered cat opens up space for another cat in need. This creates a continuous cycle of rescue and adoption.

What are the Rewards?
