One friend can change your whole life.

Penny was rescued as part of TNR project in August of 2021. She was already about 10 months old, and edging past the window of successfully transitioning from a feral kitten to a house cat. Rather than returning her to the feral colony, Penny’s foster thought she showed promise and set to work on her socialization. She soon realized that Penny needed a lot more work than she was able to give. Penny became a resident of Whiskers Way Station (WWS) where she could be among other cats and several volunteer socializers could work with her daily.

Penny proved quite the challenge. Her nickname soon became “Miss Grumpy Pants”. She made it clear she didn’t want anything to do with most people and wasn’t particularly fond of the other cats. We worked with Penny for about 5 months without a great deal of progress. Then things changed when a new resident came to WWS.

Amanda was a 5-month-old stray kitten who was trapped with some others in Philadelphia. She became a resident of WWS in January 2022. We soon discovered that Amanda had some coordination issues that concerned us. She was seen by a vet and was diagnosed with a mild case of cerebellar hypoplasia (wobbly cat syndrome), an unusual neurological disorder leading to uncoordinated movement or ataxia. Amanda shared a room with Penny, and for the first time, we saw Penny show interest in another kitty. Maybe Amanda brought out a motherly instinct in Penny, who knows? These girls started sharing their food, playing and sleeping together

For different reasons, cats like Penny and Amanda are often hard to find homes. What luck that one of our wonderful socializers saw how special these girls were! They were both adopted together and are living happily ever after with all the love and security they could ever want.
