Interview with Honey by Sheila Scanlon

Hi, My name is Sheila Scanlon and I have volunteered in a myriad of capacities with Stray Cat Blues for over two years.

Today I am interviewing Honey Buns, one of our most famous finishing school alumni about her experience when she met Stray Cat Blues but before we jump in, I wanted to share a little history about the organization I work for…

Stray Cat Blues takes in most of its cats and kittens either from shelters, trapping through our Trap-Neuter-Return Program (TNR) , or surrendered or discarded by their owners. Many cats and kittens are adoption-ready and go to good homes very quickly, however some are scared or shy and need some extra love and socializing. So off they go to Whiskers Way Station, also known as “Finishing School,” where our volunteers spend their time interacting, playing and giving these furry felines a sense of safety and comfort.

There are hundreds of cats who pass through Whiskers Way Station and are ultimately adopted and no better furrball than our famous Honey to tell that story.

Honey stretching out!

(Interview with Honey Buns now Honey (she dropped buns because it was too cute!)

Sheila: Where were you before you met Stray Cat Blues?

Honey: I had a nice home but once my owners found out I was pregnant they abandoned me and I was hungry and riddled with fleas in the streets of Philadelphia.

Sheila: How did that make you feel?

Honey: I was so mad and scared! What did they expect? They let me roam outside, didn’t have me fixed, and thought I wouldn’t go looking for love? I didn’t know any better, and when a handsome fella charmed me, I couldn’t resist. Well, I got pregnant, and those loving people turned out to be real jerks. They threw me out because they didn’t want to deal with kittens.

Sheila: Tell me about when you were picked up in the streets of Philadelphia?

Honey: I was thrilled to go to my foster home. I got plenty of good food and my fleas were bathed away, received lots of love and care, and birthed my babies in a safe and loving place. After my babies were adopted my foster mother thought I could use some confidence building, so she signed me up at Whiskers Way Station.

Sheila: Did you like Whiskers Way Station

Honey in the bookstacks

Honey: I really love people, but I didn’t trust them, you know, because of my first family. But everyone at Whiskers Way Station was so nice to me and gave me lots of love and it allowed me to trust people again.

Honey: I decided it was time to go to my furrever home, but in order to do that I had to go to PetSmart so people could meet me. Well, I guess I wasn’t quite ready, so back to Whiskers Way Station where I was crowned The Queen because I was there longer than most. What I began to realize was that people weren’t giving up on me and weren’t throwing me out. This feeling, it’s love, and it was great!

Sheila: So what happened next?

Honey: Well one day a nice man came to see me and gave me tons of pets. He whispered in my ear, “You are going to be my one and only.” So a big farewell to Whiskers Way and off to my new home and by the way, my owner is my one and only too, and I just love him!

Honey told me about some cats she got to know who passed through Whiskers Way Station and how hard everyone at Stray Cat Blues works to make sure every kitty is happy and goes to a wonderful home. She didn’t have time to tell me about all of them because it was cutting into her nap time but there are some really great interviews forthcoming in our up-and-coming newsletters about Bud, Kahlo, Cinco and Savannah. Stay tuned for more interviews with Honey!
